So Long to the Class of 2004

The Mighty Maroon Band graduates the largest crop of Seniors in recent memory this year. Eighteen band members who have been thru, done it, and survived it all will leave the ranks to pursue life in the Real World. This group has been thru a storm of band directors, both good and evil (a few both ;)!), and carried the band through some of the most turbulent years of its existence all the while maintaining the high standard of performance for which the band has become well known. They leave behind gaps in the ranks, but they also leave a wealth of experience which the band will use to continue the tradition of excellence. Good Luck to all and visit often.

Mighty Maroon Band Steps It Up

What do Mighty Maroon Band members do when they're not in the band room? Some of them become Eagle Scouts. Our own Ricky Beamer chose to build steps to the director's platform on the practice field as his Eagle Project. No more broken bones or twisted ankles at band practice this summer! Thanks Ricky!

The Mighty Maroon Band closed out the 2003 marching season with a trip to the Southeastern Classic sponsored by Newton-Conover High School in Newton, North Carolina. This marked the last competition for 18 seniors in the band as well. Check out the results on the AWARDS PAGE.

Junk Food a Big Problem in Wythe County Schools

Well, junk food may be a growing problem for some, but it didn't seem to bother the Mighty Maroon Band while in Charlotte at the Trojan Classic. The band once again carted away just about everything in Class A. See details on the Awards Page. Next up is the last stop on the Wonder Tour: the Southeastern Classic at Newton-Conover High School in Newton, North Carolina.

Still another new flag uniform pic.

Party Time!

The Mighty Maroon Band took time on the open date in the football schedule to celebrate the accomplishments so far this season. The site was the Wytheville KOA. It was a target rich environment for fun activities. SOME (see right) enjoyed themselves almost too much. Click the pic for more scenes.

Virginia Band and Orchestra Directors Marching Festival

SUPERIOR !

The Mighty Maroon Band earned a Superior Rating at the VBODA Marching Festival on Saturday October 18 hosted by Pulaski County High School. No frills, no fuss (and no hardware) each band performs solely for the judges rating of Good, Excellent, or Superior. A Superior rating here and at the spring concert ratings festival qualifies a band to be designated a Virginia Honor Band. With this rating, the MMB is half way there. GW and Tazewell were the only two Class A bands to receive a rating of Superior. Congrats on a great performance. This was also the debut of the new flag uniforms. 25thAnnual George Wythe Band Festival

WOW! What a day! Band after band strutting their collective stuffs for the consideration of the judges and to the thrill of the crowds. We had four balanced classes full of bands that had come to demonstrate some serious talent that had been honed to perfection through this first several weeks of competition season. I would not want to be a judge at such an event. It had to be just too hard to pick a champion from this group.

Congrats to Tennessee High and Richlands for taking home top honors from amongst this group. And a big thank you to all of the bands for bringing your talents to share with us in Wytheville. And, with your help and cooperation, the show ran on time despite I-77 traffic difficulties.

Look to the Festival Site for more about the day's events: awards, photos, etc. etc. and don't forget to mark us down on your calendar for next year on the second Saturday in October for the

26th Annual George Wythe Band Festival !!!

Music in the Castle

The Mighty Maroon Band was on hand Saturday Oct 4 in Bristol for the Music in the Castle competition hosted by Tennessee High School. The band had another stellar performance as they swept the Class A awards. See the details on the Awards Page.

MMB Showered with Awards at Tazewell ~ Saturday, September 27

Quite a show! The Mighty Maroon Band Competed in the Clinch River Band Festival at Tazewell High School. The band picked up just about every 1ST Place award in Class AA and finished as 1ST runner up Band of the Day behind a band twice their size. Not too shabby for the first time out. Even the cloud burst during the awards ceremony couldn't dampen our spirits (ugh!) See more on the Awards Page.

Band Camp 2003

Wait till you see this year's flag routine!
The Mighty Maroon Marching Band kicked off the 2003 marching season with two weeks of hard work and intense practice. Band Camp 2003 saw the new show begin to take shape. A lot of work is left to bring it to the field of competition, but we have a group ready to take on the task. Of course, by now you've heard not all of band camp was nose to the grind stone kinda stuff. Check out the picture page for sites from this year's camp activities.

The Band picked up Second place in the youth category at the Chautauqua Parade (It's hard to compete with a bunch of cute preschoolers in tutu's). Click your favorite photo to see more of the day's action. Does anybody know that big kid that played trumpet and stayed out of step?
