Press Release:
Over 1,000 high school band members descended on Wytheville Saturday afternoon for the 28th Annual George Wythe Band Festival. Sixteen bands from four states competed for trophies and regional bragging rights for the coming year. The bands were divided into four classes by size and judged by a panel of renowned clinicians in the categories of Music, Marching, General Effect, Percussion, Soloist, Drum Major and Auxiliaries. The Bluefield Beaver Band from Bluefield, WV won Class A with a classic 8 by 5 drill routine entitled “Sunset Express”. The Alleghany HS Trojan Pride Band from Sparta, NC finished second followed by the Galax HS Maroon Tide Band in third.
Class AA was captured by the Glenvar HS Marching Highlander Band with their show “The War Within”. The Christiansburg Blue Demon Band and the Fort Chiswell Pioneer Band were the other top finishers in the class. The Pioneers Band also won 3rd place for percussion and Drum Major Amber Hanks took top honors in the class for her performance.
The Patrick Henry Rebel Regiment topped Class AAA with their competition piece called “Emotion in Motion”. They were followed by The Blacksburg HS Marching Band, who also scored the highest Music score of the day, and the John S Battle Trojan Band.
Class AAAA was won by the Richlands HS Blue Tornado Band with a computer oriented show called “Symphonic Software”. The Ashe County HS Husky Vanguard Marching Band from West Jefferson, NC rounded out the class.
In overall honors, Bluefield HS won Bad of the Day for Class A & AA. Richlands HS won the Audience Choice Award and the Band of the Day for Class AAA & AAAA.
The band festival is held each year on the second Saturday in October. It has become a major fundraiser not just for the band, but also for the several other school organizations that participate with concessions at the event. Area middle school band members are given free tickets to attend with an adult of their choice to help kindle that music spirit and promote the growth of the high school marching band programs.
Local merchants also pitch in with donations of door prizes, food, and transportation equipment that annually help make the event one of the premier events on the fall marching competition circuit. This year the first 3 hours of the event was carried live by WYVE. Visit the Mighty Maroon Band website in the coming days at www.gwhsband.org and click on the “Festival” button to see photos of each band’s performance and a complete run down of the days events. Thanks to all that helped, thanks to all that participated, and we’ll see you all again next year on Saturday October 13, 2007 for the 29th Annual George Wythe Band Festival.
What a great field of competitors! Sixteen bands in four classes kept everyone well entertained all evening long. Many of the bands had to wait to recover SAT participants before they could head out for the Festival. Thanks to all of the bands for putting forth that extra effort and for choosing our Festival to share the fruits of your hard work.
Thanks also to the George Wythe Girls Basketball team, Softball team, Cheerleaders, Advanced Choir, T&T SPorting Goods, and to Lippo's Music Mart for stopping by and adding to the Festival atmosphere.
Soon you'll be able to click on the links to your left to visit a photo page for each band. Each page will include photos from the press box and a link to Memory Creations by Dennis where you will be able to order DVDs of your band's performance and prints of action shots taken of your favorite band member from the sidelines.
Did we do something you liked? Did we do something ... else? Please send your comments (good or bad, we

Wytheville, Virginia is located in the beautiful mountains of southwestern
Virginia at the intersection of Interstate 81 and Interstate 77 North. That
makes it an easy drive for bands in North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and
West Virginia as well as for area bands in Virginia.
Lynchburg, Roanoke, Charleston, Kingsport, and Charlotte are just a short trip away. The
leaves on the trees along the interstates should be nearing "Peak" in the second weekend
in October which will make the drive to and from the Festival that much more
enjoyable!
